I've taught a course in film watching, comparing how films and books differ in the imagination, looking at meta narratives and hidden assumptions in stories and dramas, how details of portrayals can affect our images of historical figures, and what the way we view cinema, the act of watching, can show us about ourselves (and God, in our context). Rating and content information systems were compared. Focus was on handling material too often deemed disagreeable in the larger Christian community with something other than scandalization or dismissal. A more sophisticated critical approach is offered, which more closely fits with guidelines discernible from the Christian's most commonly used guiding text. Clips were employed to illustrate various points. The purpose was educational, the use not harmful to the works (in fact, probably more promotional). Algorithms don't know this, and other hosting sites can be ad heavy. I'm hoping to place the sessions here, and include extended notes from the classes as commentary. The purpose is instructional, clips are commented upon, and as stated above, probably more promotional than capitalistically harmful to the works.
