Complicating Pleasue

by Virginia Kuhn

This clip from Sucker Punch, the 2011 film written and directed by Zach Snyder, is the first example of the denial of the voyeuristic pleasure expected when the character of Babydoll (Emily Browning) dances. We see only the other characters' reactions (mostly male drooling) after the dance; during actual dance sequence, the viewer is forced into the mind of Babydoll as she is transported to a game world where she and her cohort kick ass and take names.
