by Verena Kick

"The Cabinet of Dr. Cailgari" (1920) is shown as a first film in an "Introduction to Film" large lecture class. Then, following Ed Sikov's "Introduction to Film", the first half of the lecture follows key terms such as sound, editing, narrative and mise-en-scene. This clip from Calgari is shown to students in the context of mise-en-scene. Later, as homework, students, based on the lecture and the reading, need to answer a study questions, defining mise-en-scene using one still image from this clip.
