Germany, Germany Above All (Tucholsky, Heartfield) Foreword Photo 2

by Verena Kick

This is the 3rd photograph used in Tucholsky/Heartfield's "Germany, Germany Above All" (GG). It is the second photograph in the 2nd preface. Tucholsky's text does not refer to this image of press photographers at work. Their lenses are pointed to the left of the frame, yet the reader does not see what they photograph. It is suggested that they are "photographing" the column-like text to the left of the photo that lists places that can be photographed, and are, in fact, included in photos throughout GG. In addition, they could also photograph the 4 men and 2 women of the first photograph of the 2nd "Foreword."
