Vaudeville on Film
by Nicholas Sammond `

The 1900 film Enchanted Drawing, starring J.S. Blackton, is a good example of the intermediality of early film. Blackton was a lightning sketch artist and film cameraman who would go on to found Vitagraph pictures, which would film some of the work of Winsor McCay. Here, Blackton combines the onstage legerdemain of the lightning sketch with the newer magic of trick photography. Note his looks to the audience, involving them in the action.
