The Swamp of Racism
by Nicholas Sammond `

MGM's Swing Wedding (1937) is an energetically racist rendering of popular performiing artists of the day such as Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and Bessie Smith as frogs. What is particularly stunning about this cartoon is not the broad caricature, but the incredible violence that jazz inspires in the frog performers, and their seeming imperviousness to its excesses.
