Uncle Tom's Bungalow

by Nicholas Sammond

In this short, directed by Tex Avery, Warner Bros. converts the racist sentimentalism of Uncle Tom's Cabin into racist cynicism. Note that Uncle Tom wears the minstrel's gloves, which in this instance also signal the gloves of a house slave. In this version of the abolitionist classic, Tom saves the day by gambling his Social security pension, using loaded dice, another racist trope of the time.
