Uncle Josh at the Moving Picture Show

by Nicholas Sammond

In this short silent film we see Uncle Josh watching short films on a screen: one of a dancing woman, a train, and a couple embracing. He frequently gets up to enact the scenes, eventually tearing the screen to confront the man projecting the films. The line between disbelief at the motion picture and desire to imitate it are blurred, most strikingly when Uncle Josh tears down the screen to stop a couple embracing and kissing on screen, to engage in similarly embracing physical struggle with the man operating the projector.
