The Old Man of the Mountain (1933)

by Nicholas Sammond

Set to music by Cab Calloway and his Orchestra, this Betty Boop short features an entire animal village running away because the "old man of the mountain" is coming. Betty Boop goes up the mountain to find out who he is, and chaos ensues: he chases her until the animal villagers return to save her. The animation is significant particularly for the segment when Betty confronts the old man, and tames him and flirts with him for a while by dancing and singing with him. The animation implicitly drew lines between the African-American dominated performance of jazz, and the sexiness and raciness of the movements that it set in motion.
