The Circulation of Minstrelsy: Moran and Mack

by Nicholas Sammond

The 1936 Happy Harmony produced by Harmon and Ising, The Early Bird and the Worm, features a colloquy between two crows that is lifted directly from the routine of the white blackface minstrels Moran and Mack. (The segment begins at around 4:50.) In this instance, minstrelsy is registered in a nostalgic vein, and links blackness to a resistance to work.
