Swing, Monkey, Swing (1937)

by Nicholas Sammond

In this Columbia Color Rhapsody, monkeys in the jungle dance and sing to jazz and a St. Louis Blues number led by an elderly monkey gentleman and a rich monkey jazz singer. The animation features several chorus lines and dance formations throughout. The animation, with its minstrel-like song and dance performances and the appearance and characterization of several of the monkeys, has been seen as a racist depiction of African-American performers.
