Sanford and Sons - Superflyer

by Nicholas Sammond

This short clip is from the eighth episode of Sanford and Son's third season. Fred discovers that an uncle has left him $1500, but the only catch is that he must fly to St. Louis to help with the funeral arrangements. Fred's fear of flying gets comically played out in this sequence, in which he fantasizes about his plane being hijacked and taken to a "primitive place like Turkey or Poland," where he might catch an "oriental disease". Redd Foxx got his start on the Chitlin Circuit, a segregated entertainment network for African American performers, and his character, Fred Sanford is a distant echo of a minstrel sideman. The dynamic between Fred and Lamont (Demond Wilson) follows the classic vaudeville two-man formula, with an exasperated straight man and a comic simpleton. This formula also derives from the minstrel show, in the relationship between Tambo, Bones, and the Interlocutor.
