Roman Scandals

by Nicholas Sammond

This 1933 musical features Eddie Cantor as a (white) Roman house slave. But Cantor was famous for, among other things, his blackface act. So, in this scene Cantor disguises himself as a Nubian in order to avoid punishment. Note the contrast between the white and black women in this scene, especially around the articulation of beauty. And, note what happens to Cantor when he is discovered; apparently there is an essence to his blackness.
