Porky in Wackyland

by Nicholas Sammond

This 1939 Warner Bros. short sends Porky Pig to "Darkest Africa" in search of the dodo. Africa appears as a land beyond reason, a surreal landscape populated by minstrels and other fantastic creatures. WB would repurpose the backgrounds at the end of this clip in its 1943 Tin Pan Alley Cats, which uses racist caricature in the service of wartime propaganda.
