Minstrel Guide

by Nicholas Sammond

This guide from the 1880s describes in great detail how to stage a blackface minstrel show. Designed for amateur performers, it indicates both the popularity of the form at the time, and its crossover from professional to amateur precincts. Up until well into the 1930s, minstrel shows were a popular means for white organizations to raise funds and many guides to help them were published.
