Minnie the Moocher

by Nicholas Sammond

This 1932 Fleischer short features jazz great Cab Calloway rotoscoped as a dancing ghostly walrus that entertains and terrifies Betty Boop and Bimbo in a perfect example of the ambivalence of stereotype. The Fleischers depict jazz as a terrifying yet desirable underworld populated by rhythmic "spooks."
