Mean Streets Opening

by Nicholas Sammond

The opening of Martin Scorcese's Mean Streets (1973) plays with sound, through the main character, Charlie, whose opening monologue begins in darkness before we have met him. It plays with media-specific expectations by using what appears to be home movies. From its beginning, then, it challenges the viewer to situate her or himself in relation to the characters and the locale of the film.
