PonPonPon - Kyary Pamyu Pamyu

by Nicholas Sammond

This psychedelic Kyary video features the Japaneses "kawaii" aesthetic, but through combining it with bizarre and illogical elements. In one level of the video, Kyary is depicted amongst heaps of extremely saturated items, of toys, and commercial goods; on the other of the level of the video, trippy motifs comes through, first appearing in her window and later on intruding into the other world. These crazy, pumped up motifs such as the figure of the skull, eyeballs, dancing brains and pumping heart appear to almost burst into the first level of the video, and more as we move along into the song do the two worlds seem to totally meld together. The figure of the "raspberry" or the blackface person is particularly noticeable as s/he continually appears next to Kyary, dancing in a ludicrous fashion and appearing as the only secondary character in the scene - next to the amorphous, shifting animations. At one point the blackface figure bows to Kyary, and by the end of the video this anonymous idea of a person is multiplied, and shifts into an army of dancing figures, performing for Kyary and the viewer.
