How a Mosquito Operates

by Nicholas Sammond

This 1912 short by Winsor McCay is one of the earliest examples of drawn American animation. Originally part of one of McCay's vaudeville performances, the clip demonstrates the playful interaction between the character and an implicit audience that became an enduring trope in American animation. It also features McCay's expert handling of scale and depth.
