Felix Saves the Day (1922)

by Nicholas Sammond

Willie Brown's baseball team Nifty Nine is practicing for an upcoming game against the black team Tar Heels when Willie is arrested for accidentally hitting a cop with the ball. Felix the Cat must devise a plan to so that they can win the game. Since he cannot get Willie out of prison, Willie says that Felix must go and play in his stead, so Felix takes taxis and trains to rush to the stadium. He ends up hitting the ball so hard that it goes into the heavens, striking Jupiter Pluvius in the head, who gets angry and makes the clouds rain, ruining the game and pausing the match. The animation interestingly combines live footage and animated content. Furthermore, while Felix the Cat in look and character often mimic blackface and minstrel performances, we here see an interesting moment when Felix is up against an all-black baseball team, mirroring each others' appearances and engagement with the plot.
