Fantasia (1940) - The Sorcerer's Apprentice

by Nicholas Sammond

In this sequence from the 1940 film Fantasia, Mickey magically animates the broomsticks into doing work for him by putting on the Sorcerer's hat, but in the end to disastrous result. Mickey's broomsticks flood the hall with water, their labor never ending, and in the end, Mickey is reprimanded by the Sorcerer. Similar to Van Beuren's 1931 short Making 'Em Move, the labor taken on by the broomsticks mirror that of the labor completed by animators, a series of repetitious, piecework tasks that go into the process of creating the animations themselves.

When does the story happen?

by Lewis Passos-Wiggs

This story might be the one going all the way back to the Medieval Period.
