Fatty Boom Boom

by Nicholas Sammond

This video is a prime example of the complexity and contradiction of 21st century blackface. It opens with a depiction of a Lady Gaga impersonator touring the "concrete jungle" of urban South Africa. The driver offers her an ethnographic survey of the locals, which includes a lion and black panther. All of a sudden a gang of gunmen attempts to hijack the bus and Lady Gaga runs off in fear as Die Antwoord starts playing. The video showcases the repeated uses of full-body blackface and white face, sometimes appearing as a living "gollywog" doll. Die Antwoord criticizes the contemporary rap scene's "inbred" music, dismissing it for sounding all alike. This sentiment is further expressed in one of the backdrops in the prologue, which depicts a painted image of a hydra with the monstrous heads of Kanye West and Nicki Minaj. The video ends with a further critique Lady Gaga; she enters a gynecologist's office (the scene based on the South African artist Anton Kannemeyer's painting Black Gynecologist) who removes a "Parktown prawn," a cricket endemic to South Africa (reprised in the film District 9), and upon leaving is eaten by a lion....
