Alice the Whaler

by Nicholas Sammond

This 1927 Disney short, from the company's Alice series, features a live actress interacting with animated characters, a variation on the theme of the live animator interacting with his creations. In this case, the central animated character is the cat, Julius, an early Disney minstrel. Note that the parrot in this silent short eats the music it hears out of the air, playing with the problem of representing sound in a silent medium. Note also Disney's heavy use of cycling, repeating a certain number of frames to extend the length of an action.
