Performing Animation, Performing Race II

by Nicholas Sammond

Alice Cans the Cannibals (1925) is one of Walt Disney Productions' Alice series, in which a live child actress cavorted with animated characters. As with Trader Mickey (1932), this film combines a minstrel character, Julius, with racist caricatures. It is thus a relatively early example of the process by which racist caricatures helped to obscure the minstrel roots of the continuing cartoon character.
