Fallen Angels-Bowie and the Man Who Fell to Earth

by Phillip Thurtle

The opening sequence of Nicolas Roeg's film, The Man Who Fell to Earth. Starring David Bowie, this film continues a fascination that David Bowie had with star travel in the 1970s. Although Bowie had little to do with the content of the movie, his presence provides an interesting visual commentary on the role of the Fallen Angel, as written about by Michel Serres in Angels: A Modern Myth. It also illuminates a time in Bowie's own life as fallen angel as he wrestled with a deep addiction at this time in his career. Strikingly thin, with hair dyed orange-ish red, Bowie provides a unique vision of an alien on earth.
