Family Matters, “Good Cop Bad Cop,” Season 5, Episode 15 (1994)

by Phil Ethington

Police SGT. Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson) explains to his son Eddie Winslow (Darius McCrary), solutions on how to deal with anger in the aftermath of racism. With the backdrop of overwrought music, Carl suggests to his son not to waste his energy on anger with the police, but rather to file a complaint. Akin to the previous scene, this is a “comfort food,” explanation in accounting for police racism, and a highly normative explanation, portraying the city police as having a complaint process that is effective and fair.
