Deep space in a Vonage commercial

by Oliver Gaycken

This commercial for Vonage demonstrates the difference between deep space and deep focus. There is a considerable amount of space between the foreground, where the woman is standing, and the background, where the man is dancing. But the background of the image is not in focus, as it would be in a deep focus shot. Indeed, if the man in the background had been in focus, the humor of the scene would not have been as effective; him being out of focus suggests that his performance was an unintended contribution, which is as much a source of the humor as his actual dance moves. Of course the framing does place him in a conveniently central position.
