Match on action editing in M

by Oliver Gaycken

The match on action technique is usually used to smooth the transition between two shots, making the discontinuity of the cut. In this example from Fritz Lang's M, however, the match on action is used in a way that calls attention to itself. Here Lang is using the match on the action of the speaker making a sweeping hand gesture to underline the connection between the two groups of men--the organized criminals and the police--which are united in their pursuit of the serial killer.
