Foley work in Jurassic Park

by Oliver Gaycken

This clip demonstrates the work of Foley artists. It shows what is involved in creating a specific effect, that of a dinosaur hatching from its egg, but it also introduces a larger issue, namely that sound effects do not have to be created by the things that are visually represented. So here, for example, the sound of the egg is not in fact an egg but is a waffle cone, etc. This clip can serve as an initial example of how the soundtrack of a film is as amenable to manipulation as the visual track.
