Sound conventions in a Geico commercial

by Oliver Gaycken

This commercial relies on a contrast between sound conventions for its humor. The real customer speaks plainly about her experience, and the microphone that records her voice is not visible. "That announcer guy from the movies" (Don LaFontaine), on the other hand, not only speaks into a microphone and wears headphones but his voice also is backed by a nondiegetic movie trailer soundtrack. The point of this commercial is that we recognize sound conventions implicitly and that the juxtaposition of these conventions can be funny.
