Jump cuts in Breathless

by Oliver Gaycken

This sequence from Breathless contains a number of jump cuts. The shots of Patricia are cut together in a way that violates the so-called 30-degree rule (that shots should be varied by a least 30-degrees from the previous one). The resulting effect is that the cuts are particularly visible; the film seems to "jump" from one shot to the next instead of having the smooth flow of "invisible" continuity editing. For an intelligent summary of different interpretations of the jump cuts in Breathless, go to http://pov.imv.au.dk/Issue_06/section_1/artc10.html See especially the end of section 3 of this essay, which comments on this clip.
