And the Money Kept Rolling In (and Out) (Evita)

by Matthew Rousu

Eva Peron is loved - in part because of the money she's giving away. Those who obtain the money she's giving love Eva Peron - even though it isn't actually Peron's money. The money was obtained from taxing others.

The themes of this song are relevant today. Is somebody compassionate when they tax some individuals in order to give that money to others? How much does government power lead to corruption? In addition, this song could be a good one to lead into a discussion of the size of government. In the US and many other countries, there are debates over how much the government should be involved in food stamp programs, health care, housing, retirement and more.

And the Money Kept Rolling In

In Argentina, Eva Peron is powerful and popular in part because she's distributing tax money.
