Vertigo - Scottie follows Madeleine to the Graveyard

by Michelle Langford

This is the scene where Scottie follows Madeleine to the graveyard where she visits Carlotta Valdes' grave. This is a great clip to use to get the students to analyse shot by shot in tutorials. Compare this to clip from Ernies. Note: similar framing of Madeline (esp MCU profile shot) and the way Scottie’s averts his gaze and tries to hide himself to avoid being ‘caught’ spying. This and the clip at Ernies are also great for exploring Hitchcock’s fascination with vision and the gaze. We can discuss how he uses camera movement, POV and a subjective camera to draw the viewer into the mystery and to align our vision with Scottie’s. Of course the haunting score by Bernard Herrmann also contributes to this. Notice how Hitchcock frequently uses eyeline looks to motivate editing. This clip is also a good way to introduce to students the concept of voyeurism. Ask students to try to identify which cinematic techniques help to constitute Hitchcock's authorial signature.
