Tactile voice in Tree of Life

by Michelle Langford

Types of Film Sound – Speech. The whispered voice-over in this clip suggests an auditory space in which we are in close proximity with the speaker. We experience the world at the same time as the young narrator. We are privy to the movement of his thoughts and struggles to comprehend the death of his friend. Clips like this show the capacity of film and film sound in particular to function on a tactile level, as a medium of touch. The voice in cinema can facilitate this sense of touch.
