Scorsese as Auteur - Raging Bull

by Michelle Langford

This clip from Raging Bull is useful for introducing students to the concept of the auteur and to look at the question of stylistic signatures. In terms of Scorsese, this clip demonstrates his capacity to render subjective fantasies and desires of his characters through the use of highly stylised point of view shots. In this clip too, the use of sound contributes to our experience of Jake's perspective of Vicki and foreshadows his development of an obsessive vision, which turns to paranoid jealousy as the film develops.
