The meat of the issue

by Laura Isabel Serna

This clip from the first part of La Hora de los Hornos, a film that exemplifies the thematic concerns and formal concerns of the New Latin American Cinema, contrasts the slaughter of cows with the vacuity of commercial culture and advertising. The contrasts in lighting, editing and cinematography in this sequence emphasis the sacrifices Latin Americans have made in exchange for the glossy images, lacking in substance and heft, of global consumer culture.
