Family/Food plot conclusions

by Karen S. Kingsbury

Note the interplay of factors--including "comic" combustion and sentimental closure--that drive the plot to its climax, then unfurl into various outcomes for each of the main characters. (The separateness-within-unity is articulated when Old Chu says "As a family living under the same roof we can still lead separate lives." We can take "under the same roof" in a metaphorical sense, because "roof" here is not necessarily a material, architectural feature, but the overarching bond that creates a group identity.  There is plenty of room here for a deconstructive gender critique, but before taking that step it's useful to see how the terms of the discourse are read by the characters inside this story.)

It's worth noting that the district of Taipei in which this house is located has in fact become a chic restaurant and boutique neighborhood: it's not hard to imagine Jia-Chien opening an intimate dinner restaurant here.
