Caligari in 2012

by Kate Fortmueller

This Portlandia sketch (from season 2 episode 3) provides an example of the continued cultural impact of German Expressionism. This sketch affirms that The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and German Expressionism more generally, was an important art film movement or form of high culture, rather than just a style that influenced horror movies. The sketch itself also makes stylistic and thematic references to the film.

This sketch is also a satire of Netflix. Even though Netflix provides a wide array of films, this does not mean that people take advantage of these offerings. This sketch particularly mocks people who rent challenging movies and put off watching them.
