An assault on vision

by Kate Fortmueller

In this notorious opening to Un Chien Andalou a woman's eyeball is sliced open by a razor. This opening often elicits disgust and horror, but clearly contains rich symbolic meaning and sets up the rest of the film. This act (violence against the eye) carries a clear message for the viewer about film, vision, and the film that follows this opening. Although this film is experimental, it does bears traces of narrative (through intertitles and the loose structure).
