Montage in Hollywood films

by Kate Fortmueller

Montage sequences commonly exist to collapse time in Hollywood films (for example, many people are certainly familiar with "training montages" in sports films). However, this is not the only way that montage continues to exist in Hollywood. This sequence from Brian DePalma's film, The Untouchables, actually recreates part of Sergei Eisenstein's Odessa Staircase sequence from Battleship Potemkin (1925).  Consider how montage is used in this sequence.  How does it differ from the political ideals of Eisenstein's film?
