Doppelgängers and Expressionism

by Kate Fortmueller

Expressionist films often have extreme symmetry and double space as part of the sets and décor. However, these films might also be about doubles or doppelgängers. In The Student of Prague, Balduin's reflection comes out of the mirror to wreck havoc on his life. It is also worth noting that Balduin is played by Conrad Veidt (the somnambulist from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari [1920]).
