Expressionist sets

by Kate Fortmueller

The sets in Expressionist films are often heavily stylized and use sharp angles and are meant to convey psychological elements of the characters. This exterior from The Student of Prague resembles some of the sets from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), but the sidewalk and the buildings of this set seem more naturalistic than those of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
