Remakes in the silent era

by Kate Fortmueller

The circulation of films during the silent era enabled a number of "remakes" (or unauthorized rip offs) of films. This Pathé Frères film has the same plot as D.W. Griffith's The Lonely Villa (1909). Although the plot of these two films is the same, the editing in each film is different. How is suspense created in The Physician of the Castle? Compare these sequences to those in The Lonely Villa.

The Physician of the Castle (1908)

Thieves call a doctor away from his home, murder the maid, and attempt to rob his house. This Pathé Frères film is likely the source material for D.W. Griffith's The Lonely Villa (1909).
