Performance and Joan of Arc

by Kate Fortmueller

Joan of Arc is often noted for its use of close ups and Maria Falconetti's performance. Joan of Arc focuses on the emotional history of Joan of Arc rather than the details of historical events. For Dreyer the realism came (in part) from the experience of the actress' body. Falconetti shaved her head for this film and is actually crying in this final sequence.
