Remakes in the 1900s

by Kate Fortmueller

The circulation of films during the silent era enabled a number of "remakes" (or unauthorized rip offs) of films. D.W. Griffith's The Lonely Villa (1909) is based on a Pathé Frères film from one year earlier. This same plot was remade as Suspense (1913) by Lois Weber. Although the plots are the same, the editing in each film is different. Compare the techniques used to create suspense in each of these three films.

The Lonely Villa (1909)

This D.W. Griffith film is a remake of Pathé Frères film, The Physician of the Castle (1908). This plot was revisited later by Lois Weber in Suspense (1913).
