The Fallen Woman Film

by Kate Fortmueller

The Goddess is an example of a fallen woman film. In fallen woman films a woman makes a mistake in her life (often sexual) and often ends up being ostracized from the rest of society as a prostitute or an unwed mother. This results in her decline and often, her eventual death. This sequence shows the mother's decline. Even though she is in jail it ends on a hopeful note - with her son's future secured.
