Busby Berkeley and his legacies

by Kate Fortmueller

Midway through The Big Lebowski, The Dude (Jeff Bridges) finds himself at porn producer Jackie Treehorn's (Ben Gazzara) home (the Sheats Goldstein house designed by John Lautner). Treehorn drugs The Dude who fades into an elaborately choreographed musical dream sequence. This number, inspired by the Busby Berkeley sequences of the 1930s Warner Bros. musicals utilizes many of the formal elements and replicates the elaborate choreography, but also picks up on the sexual imagery that is commonly on display in the Berkeley numbers.
