Expressionist Subjects

by Kate Fortmueller

Nosferatu is an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula (hence the familiar characters and plot). In this sequence Jonathan Harker becomes suspicious of his host (Nosferatu) and Mina Harker senses that something is wrong and rises from her bed ("in a somnambulistic dream"). While Expressionism is usually associated with stylistic conventions, Expressionist films often took up particular subjects that leaned toward fantasy, horror, and exploration of dream states - think of the somnambulist in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920).
