Synchronization and unified space

by Kate Fortmueller

Film space, especially in dialogue sequences, is fragmented. There are a number of rules of editing that help us understand where things or people are in space and how they are positioned in relation to each other. One of the key ways we (as viewers) can come to understand this space as unified or cohesive is through sound, which helps us understand the spatial relations. This sequence also demonstrates another sound technique when the scene transitions from a dialogue sequence to a musical number. What is this technique and what changes between the first and second version of the song?
