Cabiria's lingering influence

by Kate Fortmueller

In this sequence from Metropolis Fritz Lang renders the explosion in the factory to look like the temple of Moloch from Cabiria (1914). This reference indicates the importance of particular films on the development of film style and indicates the international circulation and influence of certain key films. Cabiria often gets cited as being the influence for the epic scale of D.W. Griffith's Intolerence (1916), but it clearly influenced Fritz Lang’s vision of mass death in Metropolis.
